Straight razor shaving is one of those experiences that you have to try first-hand in order to fully appreciate. There’s a striking difference between shaving with a disposable cartridge razor versus using a finely sharpened straight razor.
Although the demands of the average guy’s schedule tend to pressure him towards going for the fastest shaving method possible, I can say that you’re missing out on an enlightening experience if you have never tried shaving with a straight razor. There’s a certain nostalgic, classically masculine, “old world” feel that straight razor shaving provides that’s simply impossible to duplicate with the cheapo cartridge razors of today. Not only that, but in terms of achieving a smooth, clean shave, straight razor shaving simply can’t be beat.
Even within the microcosm of straight razor shaving, you can still run afoul of a good experience if you choose a sub-par razor. Life is way too short to use a crappy straight razor, so if you’re looking for a razor that can deliver solid performance without breaking the bank, I submit to you that the Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Straight Razor is a top choice that is definitely worth your consideration.
Main Features And Highlights
The Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Straight Razor is forged from genuine stainless steel, not aluminium, which makes for a much more manoeuvrable blade. It’s nice and sturdy, and it has a good weight in the hand, providing you with a consistent and solid shaving experience. The blades also stay nice and secure, with rounded exposure at the tip of the blade compartment to minimize cuts and nicks. This is definitely a plus for people who don’t have “surgeon’s hands”, or if they have jitters that are related to their morning caffeine routine. It also comes with 5 Shark super-stainless steel half blades, but it can also be used with any number of double-edged blades (think Dorco, Astra, Derby, etc.).
The Parker SR1 Straight Razor is a worthy performer all the way around. It’s not so light that it feels more like a toy than a real razor, and yet it’s not so heavy that it’s too hard to get a good feel for what you’re doing. This razor is well-balanced and the blades are nice and duly sharp, which means that you can achieve a close, smooth shave minus all of the snagging that can come from using an inferior blade. If you value your skin and have no desire to lose blood unnecessarily, the Parker SR1 is a good choice for achieving a clean shave with no fuss and no muss.
Pros And Cons
The Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Razor has a nice heft, and features solid quality construction. Even though this razor could fall into “entry-level” category when it comes to price, its sturdy build belies its inexpensive price tag. You can expect about three or four decent shaves from each blade (unless you’re related to Chewbacca, then it will be less), and the shave is nice and close. The swivel system for installing the blades is a very convenient feature, as it enables the blades to stay nice and secure without sticking out too much. This can really be beneficial to guys who are concerned about sustaining too many nicks or cuts when outlining their beard.
One common complaint about the SR1 is that the pins and rivets are somewhat inferior in quality in comparison to the quality of the scales and blades. Since the SR1 comes at such a comparatively inexpensive price, more than likely if any compromises were made in terms of quality, it would be with the pins and rivets.
Ease Of Use
Once the blades are loaded and secure, this razor affords a nice, clean and smooth shave with no frills. The only minor issue that some guys have reported is that changing the blades out can be a chore at times. Other than that, you can expect the SR1 to do its job with elegant efficiency.
Value For Money
Weighing in at less than twenty-five bucks, the SR1 is definitely a great value for the money. There are razors that sell for twice as much as the SR1, but barely offer anything extra in terms of usability and durability. Long story short, the SR1 offers a very respectable bang for your buck.
Would I Recommend This Product?
I definitely would, with the small caveat that changing the blades out can possibly be challenging at times. Other than that, the Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Straight Razordoes its job well, and won’t leave you hanging as far as delivering a smooth, clean and quality shave is concerned.
